Introduction

High-quality surveillance data allows health authorities to make informed decisions and respond effectively to disease outbreaks. Pusiga District, despite having an effective surveillance team in place still encounters challenges with data quality. We conducted a data quality audit (DQA) in selected facilities to determine the strength, weaknesses, opportunities and threats (SWOT) affecting surveillance data in Pusiga District.

Methods

Between January and February 2025, a DQA was conducted in Zong-Natinga CHPS, Widana Health Centre, and Blessing Hospital. Health staff were interviewed using a semi-structured questionnaire, surveillance records were reviewed, and surveillance operations were observed. Both internal and external factors influencing data quality were assessed, and findings were summarized into a SWOT analysis table.

Results

A total of 13 participants were interviewed and majority were males, 61.5% (8/13). Ability to review data regularly, reporting on all zero cases, and dedicated staff who report to the next level were identified strengths. Weaknesses included facilities the absence of displayed list of notifiable diseases and case definitions, not charting case reports and lacking information flow charts. Opportunities comprised regular capacity building training for staff by the regional level, availability of logistics, provision of regular feedback from higher level and presence of a laboratory in some facilities. Threats include ongoing conflict in Bawku, language barrier, and cross-border-migration between Ghana, Togo and Burkina Faso.

Conclusion

All facilities demonstrated commitment to zero reporting and regular data review and supported by staff training and logistics. However, the absence of displayed notifiable disease lists and case definitions weakens data quality. The District Surveillance Officer should ensure that all facilities have updated lists of reportable diseases and case definitions visibly displayed to strengthen disease surveillance in the district.
